Kevin McCarthy Loses EIGHTH Bid For House Speaker

The 118th session of Congress entered its third day on Tuesday, though the proceedings of the House remain paralyzed until a Speaker is successfully voted in and swears the remaining members into office. McCarthy’s bid for the job has been repeatedly undermined as he attempts to negotiate with the hard-line Republican holdouts who’ve so far prevented him from reaching the 218 votes he needs.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger on Monday said his force is “clearly better off” than it was before the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, which happened two years ago Friday.

Manger said in a statement Monday that the Capitol Police force will exceed both its pre-pandemic and pre-Jan. 6 staffing levels in a few months, and that the force has hired a new intelligence director and leaders from “premier” law enforcement agencies who have experience in national security special events.

A 4-year-old girl, a 9-year-old boy and two adults survived Monday after their car plunged off a Northern California cliff along the Pacific Coast Highway near an area known as Devil's Slide that's known for fatal wrecks, officials said.

The Tesla sedan plummeted more than 250 feet from the highway and crashed into a rocky outcropping. It appears to have flipped a few times before landing on its wheels, wedged against the cliff just feet from the surf, according to Brian Pottenger, a battalion chief for Coastside Fire Protection District/Cal Fire.
