Where were you when President Kennedy was assassinated?

I'll go first.

I was 14 and in the ninth grade in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, headed to my Latin class when a student ran by shouting that the president was shot and is dead. He just kept repeating that over and over. I ran to my Latin class and my teacher, Sister Anne, looked at me directly in the eyes and nodded yes. Her eyes were filled with tears. I sat down at the nearest desk, crumbled is more descriptive. The principal came over the loudspeaker and we listened to a radio report for several minutes. We said a prayer and were told to go home.

My father died the year before. I felt so lost.

But they both inspired my politics to this very day.

  1. Ah, Lisa, I remember the day Kennedy was assassinated. I was 18. on a Sunday morning in Brisbane, Queensland Australia, and I too cried. That also marked my continuing interest in United States Politics. Lisa, you kept me sane (I am a Vietnam vet with PTSD) during the George W. Years, and you continue to do so during this rape of democracy by the mad emperor without clothes. With much love and warmth and appreciation. Norm Wotherspoon

  2. I was in 3rd grade and it was one of those ominously gray days. The principal called our teacher into the hallway and she in turn told the class. I remember so well that moment of shocked silence before the first classmate burst out into a wail. And we all followed suit or sat stock still, unbelieving. It was as stunning to us then as 9/11 was years later.
