My wife and I visited Mt. St. Helens in, I think it was 2011. We saw the millions of logs clogging Spirit Lake and were curious about them. We asked some local officials about it. They said scientists cordoned off a large area around the mountain to study how the land would recover if it were left alone, untouched by man. Spirit Lake was within this area and of course, the eruption blasted the trees into the lake. You'd have thought the logs would have absorbed water and sunk over the 43 years since the eruption. It's astounding to me that they are still afloat and the last remaining evidence of destruction.
