In 1971 I took a psych class on the effects of positive and negative reinforcement. We studied torture and we studied the studies on torture that were done post World War II by the US government, colleges and universities around the world. And they basically came to the same conclusion, that there was no way to know if information gathered from torture was true. Hence, torture was deemed barbaric and not effective compared to other positive methods that did gather correct information. Like offering a cigarette as opposed to pulling out fingernails.

So when George W. Bush said torture was okey dokey, I knew in my heart that it would only harm the USA's reputation and it did. Deservedly so.
