ReplyDeleteHere in Southwestern Virginia, I do that, too. In Spring, box turtles decide it's a great time to cross our roads for something spellbinding on the other side. I see at least on one every trip to the store. When you drive up on them, they just stand there and stare at you. I stop, get out, pick them up and take them across. It's a simple task that makes me feel like I'm just like a good person. The people stacked up behind me, laying on their horns don't share that opinion.
Truthfully, where we live I seldom see more than one or two other cars on the way to the store. And who's to say they wouldn't do the same? (Save the turtle, not lay on their horn.)
Are they turtles or tortoises? Or, maybe terrapins. I've always had tortoises and box turtles. They are smarter than folks think. And not slow, if they are warm enough. Also, very determined.
