The Right Stuff

Several months after the US Supreme Court handed the presidency to George W Bush in 2000, I saw Bill Clinton give a speech on C-SPAN. The subject stressed the importance to keep the lines of communication open, especially with our adversaries, and to speak truth to power, but with respect. It was one of the finest speeches I ever saw Bill Clinton deliver. I sure needed to hear that speech at that awful time.

John McCain believed the same thing. I felt John McCain handed the presidency to Barack Obama when he defended him to that woman who called Obama an Arab (like that was something bad). John McCain didn't like dirty campaigning, torture or bashing immigrants. That is why today's Republicans hate John McCain.

McCain made mistakes, as we all do but he'd apologize for most of them -- Keating 5, the Iraq War, Sarah Palin and on and on. McCain never flew a direct route from DC to Arizona because after he introduced legislation to expand direct flights to Arizona, he was accused of doing it for his own convenience.

In almost 18 years online, I have questioned only one person's military career, and that was George W. Bush. His last 18 months in the Texas National Guard only had one record and that was for a dental appointment in Alabama. Somehow his records were gone. Gone. Dan Rather got fired for covering this disturbing fact.

The other day I saw an interview with Doris Kearns Goodwin, the historian. She relayed a story of Leo Tolstoy visiting Muslim barbarians in Asia who wanted to know of the great leaders of the world.

This is an excerpt from Tolstoy's 1909 article: But you have not told us a syllable about the greatest general and greatest ruler of the world. We want to know something about him. He was a hero. He spoke with a voice of thunder; he laughed like the sunrise and his deeds were strong as the rock and as sweet as the fragrance of roses...He was so great that he even forgave the crimes of his greatest enemies and shook brotherly hands with those who had plotted against his life. His name was Lincoln and the country in which he lived is called America.

Our greatest leaders were humble men because they believed they were serving something greater than themselves.

That was John McCain.

And is Bill Clinton.

And is Hillary Clinton.

And is Barack Obama.

We are truly fortunate to have such selflessness in our midst.
